During a recent council meeting, members discussed the approval of funding for two artistic projects slated for 2024, aimed at enhancing community engagement and tourism. The projects include a music camp led by artist Jebidami and a topiary installation by Anne Wood in Kempner Park.
Antoinette and Kathleen, representatives for the projects, presented the details, emphasizing that while the council was not being asked to approve contracts at this meeting, the groundwork had been laid with input from various departments to ensure smooth implementation. The topiary project will feature five Victorian-era topiaries, with Wood having secured necessary approvals from the Kempner Foundation and Parks and Recreation.
The music camp is designed for youth and will culminate in two performances, contributing to local tourism. Additionally, Wood plans to host a workshop in collaboration with the Galveston Arts Center and an event involving master gardeners, further engaging the public.
Councilman David Finkley, serving as the liaison for the arts group, motioned for the approval of the projects, which received unanimous support from fellow council members. The meeting concluded with expressions of gratitude for the committee's hard work and the anticipation of the positive impact these projects will have on the community.
