The City of Alpena is poised to embark on a significant preservation project for the historic Little Red Lighthouse, following a recent government meeting where officials discussed funding for a comprehensive survey and rehabilitation plan. The Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy has been granted limited access to the lighthouse for historical and rehabilitative purposes, highlighting its importance to the community and its maritime heritage.
To facilitate this initiative, the Conservancy has engaged Zapski Associates, a firm specializing in architecture, landscape architecture, and historic preservation based in Marquette, Michigan. The firm has provided a quote of $6,800 to conduct a detailed study of Little Red, which will assess its current condition and develop plans for future renovations and maintenance.
During the meeting, Parks Coordinator Kevin outlined the proposal to allocate funds from the fiscal year 2024-2025 parks budget for this project. He noted that after reviewing planned upgrades for various city parks, it was determined that many improvements could be achieved more cost-effectively than initially expected, allowing for the necessary funding to be available for the lighthouse project.
Council members expressed support for the motion, acknowledging the unique nature of the work required for historical structures like the lighthouse. The discussion emphasized the importance of preserving such landmarks, with Zapski Associates being recognized as the only firm on the east coast capable of conducting these specialized studies.
The motion to approve the use of $6,800 for the historical survey and maintenance recommendations for Little Red Lighthouse is expected to move forward, marking a crucial step in the preservation of this cherished community asset.
