In a recent government meeting, officials discussed significant developments in the Supportive Housing Initiative Pipeline (SHIP), focusing on two key projects aimed at addressing homelessness in the community. Nathan Fernandez, a senior planner in health and human services, highlighted the progress of the Foundation Communities Burleson Studios, which will provide 104 single residency occupancy units for individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. The project, with a total development cost of approximately $33 million, is supported by a $15 million contract from the county's Local Fiscal Recovery Fund (LFRF) and additional funding from federal and state tax credit programs.

The Burleson Studios project is strategically located adjacent to the Mobile Loaves and Fishes expanded Burleson Village, fostering collaboration between the two organizations. Foundation Communities plans to offer extensive support services, including case management, counseling, and a healthy food pantry, to ensure residents have the resources needed to maintain stable housing. The project aims to close in October, break ground in November, and begin leasing by late 2026.

Additionally, the meeting addressed the Works 3 at Tillery project, which will provide 120 mixed apartments specifically for youth aged 18 to 24 who are aging out of foster care and facing homelessness. This initiative, led by LifeWorks Austin, has secured $12.99 million in funding from the county and will focus on providing educational programming and recovery services tailored to the unique needs of this demographic.

Both projects are part of a broader effort to enhance affordable housing options and support services for vulnerable populations in the area. Officials emphasized the importance of integrating health care services with housing initiatives, particularly for individuals with complex needs, to create a comprehensive support system that facilitates long-term stability and recovery. The court unanimously approved the funding and development plans, marking a significant step forward in the community's efforts to combat homelessness.
