Riviera Beach has lifted its flood watch as the National Weather Service continues to monitor a tropical storm warning affecting the area. Residents are advised to shelter in place for the next 12 to 36 hours as the storm approaches, with increasing winds expected throughout the evening and into tomorrow morning.
While the flood advisory has been lifted, officials caution that localized flooding may occur due to intense rainfall, although long-duration rain is not anticipated. The primary concern remains the potential for tornadoes, with several tornado watches in effect until at least 9 PM, likely extending into Thursday morning.
Palm Beach County is bracing for sustained winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 60 miles per hour. The worst weather is expected to hit around 8 PM, with squalls continuing until approximately 4 AM Thursday. Residents are urged to avoid road travel during this time for safety.
Marine conditions are also a concern, prompting the closure of municipal beachfront services due to high surf and rip currents. Officials are monitoring the storm's path closely, noting that even slight deviations could significantly alter its impact on the area.
Captain Glenn Meyer of the Riviera Beach Police Department reassured the community that law enforcement and fire rescue services will remain operational as long as conditions permit. Residents are encouraged to report any storm-related issues through the city's notification system, QAlert, and to stay safe during the storm's passage. Further updates will be provided after first light on Thursday.
