During a recent city council meeting, Canyon Lake officials proclaimed October 6th through 12th, 2024, as Fire Prevention Week, emphasizing the critical role of smoke alarms in safeguarding lives. This annual observance, established in 1925, commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which left over 100,000 people homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 structures.
This year's campaign, titled \"Smoke Alarms Make Them Work for You,\" aims to educate residents on the importance of having functioning smoke alarms in their homes. The campaign outlines three essential actions: install smoke alarms in every room and outside each sleeping area, test them monthly, and replace any smoke alarms that are 10 years old or unresponsive.
The Canyon Lake Fire Department will actively participate in Fire Prevention Week by providing public education to reduce fire-related casualties. The council highlighted alarming statistics from the National Fire Protection Association, noting that approximately three out of five fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms.
In addition to the proclamation, Fire Chief announced a new initiative offering free smoke detector testing for residents, including battery replacements as needed. This effort aims to mitigate the risk of home fire fatalities, which are often linked to non-functioning smoke detectors.
The city council urged all residents to create and practice an escape plan, reinforcing the importance of fire safety in the community.
