In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the annual update of the three-mile area plan, which is mandated by the 1965 Municipal Annexation Act. This update is crucial for ensuring that the municipality and its surrounding areas can adequately serve newly annexed regions while managing growth sustainably.
The plan, which serves as a snapshot of current jurisdictional boundaries and growth potential, does not alter the existing master plan, zoning regulations, or any other governing documents. It primarily serves to document changes and provide a framework for future development.
For 2024, the plan highlights one significant annexation: the Pope property, which has transitioned from agricultural land to designated open space and a riparian corridor as part of the Dransfeld Bridge expansion. Additionally, nearby Aurora has also seen a 19-acre annexation in the Kings Point area.
Transportation infrastructure updates were a focal point of the meeting, with several key projects underway. The Dransfeld connection to Matzenbacher is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, while the Chambers Road North-South connection is anticipated to finish in the first quarter of next year. Other completed projects include Belford and Bayou Gulch.
No changes were reported for significant waterways or parks, and the only zoning modification noted was in Douglas County, where agricultural land was rezoned for multifamily affordable housing.
The planning commission has recommended that the town council approve the 2024 three-mile area plan, which reflects a straightforward year of planning and development. The meeting concluded with an invitation for questions from council members.
