The Poulsbo Fire Department is set to open a new fire station in the first quarter of 2025, with plans to staff it with two firefighters around the clock. This initiative, aimed at enhancing public safety, has been in the works for some time, and officials are urging the hearing examiner to expedite the review process to facilitate progress.
During a recent government meeting, Chief of the Poulsbo Fire Department provided insights into the operational structure of the new station. Approximately 72% of the department's emergency responses are related to medical services, indicating a significant demand for emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics. The new station will primarily operate a medic unit, responding to an estimated six to seven emergency incidents daily.
Currently, the staffing plan includes two personnel who are cross-trained as EMTs and paramedics, ensuring that they can effectively handle both fire and medical emergencies. However, due to funding constraints, the station will not initially be equipped with larger fire engines or extensive firefighting equipment. Future plans include the addition of two more personnel to enable the station to operate both a fire engine and a medical unit.
This strategic approach reflects the department's commitment to addressing the community's needs while navigating budgetary limitations. The focus on medical response underscores the evolving role of fire departments in emergency services, prioritizing medical emergencies in their operational framework.
