AmbiX Manufacturing, a small business based in Albany, New Hampshire, has successfully navigated significant challenges in the plastics injection molding industry, thanks in part to government support and renewable energy initiatives. Founded in 2008, AmbiX specializes in custom plastics engineering and has recently implemented a solar energy system to combat rising electricity costs.
During a recent government meeting, Melissa, a representative from AmbiX, detailed the company's journey and the critical role of the USDA's Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) grant in their transition to renewable energy. Facing a staggering 52% increase in electricity rates in 2022, AmbiX was at risk of jeopardizing its operations and the livelihoods of its employees. The company, which prides itself on quality and competitive pricing, found itself struggling against both domestic and international competitors, particularly those benefiting from government subsidies abroad.
To address these challenges, AmbiX sought assistance from local economic councils and federal programs, ultimately applying for the REAP grant. In December 2023, they received funding that enabled the installation of a solar panel system capable of producing up to 100 kilowatts of power. This system, completed in June 2024, allows AmbiX to generate approximately 65% of the energy required to run its operations, significantly reducing its electricity costs by an estimated $75,000 annually.
The transition to solar energy not only enhances AmbiX's sustainability efforts but also positions the company to remain competitive in the market. By minimizing reliance on traditional energy sources, AmbiX is better equipped to manage production costs while continuing to provide high-quality products to its customers.
Melissa emphasized the importance of community and government support in their success, stating that without these programs, the future of AmbiX would have been uncertain. The company's commitment to sustainability and responsible manufacturing practices reflects a broader trend among small businesses seeking to adapt to economic pressures while contributing positively to environmental stewardship.
