During a recent city council meeting, a proposal was put forth to enhance pedestrian safety at the Arbor Avenue and Warrenville Road crosswalk. The recommendations include the installation of flashing lights on crosswalk signs for vehicles traveling in both directions, as well as the addition of activation buttons for these lights on either side of the street.
The proposal also suggests relocating the existing crosswalk sign, which currently misleads pedestrians by indicating the crosswalk is closer than it actually is. This change aims to align the signage with the actual crosswalk location, improving clarity for both pedestrians and drivers.
The impetus for these recommendations stems from safety concerns raised by residents. A previous crosswalk at Park and Warrenville Road was removed due to safety issues, and residents have expressed frustration over the lack of safe crossing options, particularly at the Roosevelt Road intersection, which has been deemed unsafe for pedestrians. Despite attempts to engage the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) for improvements, the city has faced rejections for various safety proposals.
The city's Complete Streets policy, which promotes safer and more accessible streets for all users, supports the need for improved pedestrian infrastructure. The proposed enhancements to the Warrenville Road crosswalk are intended to facilitate safer crossings for students, families, and residents accessing local parks and the Illinois Prairie Path.
The council is expected to consider these recommendations, which aim to create a safer environment for pedestrians and encourage walking and biking in the community.
