The Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority (DDA) recently introduced its new public arts initiative, the Elevate program, aimed at enhancing the downtown experience through art and placemaking. During a meeting led by Amber Miller, the DDA's capital projects and planning overseer, and Hannah Kirkpatrick, the art and public director at the Ann Arbor Art Center, the program's objectives and planned projects were outlined.
The Elevate program will allocate 1% of the construction budget from each capital project for public art installations, emphasizing the importance of integrating art into urban infrastructure. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to foster a resilient and vibrant downtown, with funding primarily sourced from tax increment financing (TIF) and the city's parking system.
Miller highlighted the program's goals, which include promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as enhancing community interaction and creativity. The DDA aims to celebrate the unique qualities of downtown Ann Arbor while strengthening the connection between residents and their shared spaces.
The program will feature both large-scale permanent installations and seasonal temporary art pieces, drawing inspiration from successful initiatives in other cities like Grand Rapids and Boston. The DDA is also seeking to involve a member of the public arts commission in each selection committee to ensure community representation in the decision-making process.
As the DDA prepares for upcoming projects slated for 2024, 2025, and a significant capital project in 2026, the Elevate program represents a commitment to enriching the cultural landscape of downtown Ann Arbor and fostering a sense of place for all residents and visitors.
