During a recent government meeting, officials provided updates on the Pony Point project, which has received clearance from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This project aims to replicate the pavilion style of the Asmanmos site, enhancing local recreational facilities. However, progress has been delayed due to the discovery of an endangered species, Nissogenes Rutensis, endemic to the region. This finding necessitated compliance with federal regulations, which has complicated the timeline since the project's approval in 2021 or 2022.
Despite these challenges, officials expressed optimism about moving forward with the project. A pivot conference is tentatively scheduled for October 9-12 during the Fiesta, aimed at engaging contractors and stakeholders in the development process. The awarded contractor for the project has withdrawn, prompting a rebate process to invite new bids.
Additionally, discussions highlighted the reopening of the Rota Resort, with plans to support local businesses by facilitating meetings and workshops through partnerships with organizations like the Northern Marianas College. This initiative aims to promote economic activity and community engagement in the region.
