During a recent city council meeting, Council Member Denis Enofe raised significant concerns regarding safety and infrastructure issues in the city, particularly focusing on the Peace Plaza and Discovery Square. Enofe highlighted potential hazards posed by readable pavers that could distract drivers, suggesting that their removal should be included in the city’s budget. He emphasized that these pavers could create a liability for the city.
Additionally, Enofe pointed out that the street in front of Discovery Square is inadequately designed for the city's articulated buses, which have had to cross into oncoming traffic due to insufficient width. He expressed frustration that this issue had not been previously addressed by city engineers, who typically model street designs to accommodate such vehicles.
The council member also questioned the transparency of city expenditures, particularly regarding the costs of benches and shelters in the area. He noted that some benches, which were supposed to be ADA-compliant, have not met accessibility standards, forcing individuals in wheelchairs to navigate into traffic. Enofe sought clarity on how residents could access information about these costs, indicating that there have been difficulties in obtaining accurate financial data.
In response, city officials assured Enofe that expenditure details are available online and through monthly council packets. They also confirmed that competitive bidding processes are in place to prevent inflated costs from contractors.
The meeting took a tense turn when Enofe was asked to leave after violating council rules, leading to a brief recess. Following the interruption, the council moved on to discuss other agenda items, indicating a need for continued dialogue on the issues raised by Enofe.
