In a recent government meeting, officials discussed several key initiatives, including the proposed installation of a disc golf course at Brown Family Park and amendments to the Somerville Unified Development Ordinance.
The proposed disc golf course, which would feature nine holes, aims to enhance recreational opportunities in the park, which spans over seven acres. The project is contingent upon securing funding from the Berkeley County Parks and Recreation Department (PARD), with a decision expected after their meeting on October 28. The total estimated cost for the project is $10,645, with PARD funds potentially covering 80% of the expenses. The initiative received unanimous support from the committee, moving forward to the council for final approval.
Additionally, the committee addressed amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance, specifically regarding the Tree Protection Board and the Historic District Board of Architectural Review. The proposed changes include increasing the Tree Protection Board's membership from five to seven to ensure a quorum at meetings, a request made following previous discussions. This amendment was also supported unanimously and will be forwarded to the council.
Another amendment discussed involved increasing the membership requirements for the Historic District Board from three to five members residing in the historic district. However, this proposal faced opposition, with a motion to deny it being seconded and also moved to the full council for consideration.
These discussions reflect ongoing efforts to enhance community recreational facilities and ensure effective governance in local development and preservation efforts.
