The university reported its highest enrollment increase in 33 years, with a 3.79% rise, adding 431 students to its ranks. This marks the second consecutive year of enrollment growth, a trend not seen since 2000.

Chancellor Lane emphasized the importance of outreach efforts, noting that the freshman class has grown by 8.45% since 2023 and 69.5% since 2019. Graduate program enrollment has also seen a positive trajectory, thanks to targeted recruitment strategies and partnerships with community colleges. The Saluki Step Ahead program, which connects with students early in their community college journey, has reached a 111% enrollment rate, demonstrating the effectiveness of these initiatives.

Diversity efforts were also a focal point, with notable increases in Hispanic student enrollment by 12% and a 5% rise in retention rates among African American students. The university is actively working to maintain and improve these numbers, aiming for a more inclusive campus environment.

Financial investments in faculty and staff were discussed, including a new collective bargaining agreement that will provide raises for both tenure-track and non-tenure faculty, as well as graduate assistants. The university is also addressing salary compression issues among civil service staff to ensure equitable compensation.

Looking ahead, SIU Carbondale is set to celebrate its enrollment achievements in October and is committed to reaching a goal of 15,000 students by 2030. The Chancellor expressed optimism about upcoming initiatives, including a Chicago outreach event aimed at attracting more students from the area, and a Saluki women's weekend to honor female leaders within the university community.
