During a recent government meeting, Germaine Myers, a lessee from the Nanakuli Hawaiian homestead, raised urgent concerns regarding the inoperability of emergency sirens in several communities across Oahu and Kauai. Myers highlighted that critical sirens, including the Princess Kahano siren in Nanakuli, have been non-functional for over four years, posing a significant risk to residents' safety.

Myers presented evidence of the malfunctioning sirens, emphasizing that the lack of operational warning systems could endanger lives, particularly in light of recent emergencies such as the devastating fires in Lahaina. She noted that community members, including a retired teacher, have expressed fears about not receiving timely alerts in case of emergencies.

In Waimanalo, Myers reported that two out of three sirens are also inoperative, with one deemed beyond repair. She urged the commissioners to take immediate action by contacting relevant authorities to expedite repairs and ensure that these vital safety systems are restored to functionality.

Myers concluded her testimony by calling for collaboration among local leaders and the community to advocate for the necessary repairs, stressing the importance of having reliable emergency alerts to protect residents from potential dangers.
