In a recent government meeting, significant strides were made towards enhancing employment opportunities for students with special needs through a new partnership with the Baptist Hospital System. Dr. Henrietta Munoz, CEO of the hospital, joined local educators to announce the initiative, which will provide eight students with a year-long residency-style internship. Six students are already onboard, with two more set to join shortly. This program allows students to explore various job roles within the hospital, including positions in the cath lab and food supply chain, helping them identify their career interests.
The meeting also highlighted a successful community engagement effort, with over 55 parents and community members attending the first combined Superintendent's Community Council meeting. Participants expressed high satisfaction, with 94% finding the information relevant and 100% indicating they would recommend the meeting to others. Feedback suggested a desire for more discussion time, indicating a strong community interest in contributing to district goals.
Additionally, a professional development session held on October 11th received positive feedback, with all departments participating in training aimed at enhancing teaching effectiveness. The session focused on various topics, including content deepening and food safety.
The meeting concluded with an unveiling of a new wall dedicated to honoring the top graduates from local high schools, further emphasizing the district's commitment to academic excellence. The initiative aims to foster a supportive environment for students and strengthen community ties, as evidenced by partnerships with local organizations like Mosaic Church, which recently assisted in organizing the Regina Reed Center to better serve community needs.
