In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the ongoing efforts to upgrade the city’s surveillance infrastructure, particularly focusing on the replacement of aging downtown cameras. The current camera system, which has been in place for over a decade, is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain and repair, prompting the search for more advanced technology.
The department explored various options and ultimately identified Flock, a company specializing in modern surveillance solutions, as a potential partner. Flock's offerings include license plate readers and advanced camera systems designed to address common challenges faced by cities across the United States.
In March 2023, the city entered into discussions with Flock, leading to the decision to implement a pilot program. This program will feature 21 license plate readers and five new cameras strategically placed in high-crime and high-service areas identified by the city’s intelligence and analysis unit. The pilot aims to enhance public safety and improve the city’s ability to respond to incidents in real-time.
The pilot program is set to launch in March 2024, marking a significant step towards modernizing the city’s surveillance capabilities and addressing the evolving needs of law enforcement and community safety.
