In a recent government meeting, key discussions centered around the successful completion of two significant collective bargaining agreements and the ongoing efforts to support affinity groups within the Kent School District (KSD).
The meeting highlighted the conclusion of contracts with the Kent Education Association (KEA) and the Teamsters, representing teachers and bus drivers, respectively. Both agreements were ratified overwhelmingly, with the KEA achieving an 85% approval rate for a three-year contract, finalized just after the school year ended in June. The Teamsters also secured a three-year contract, reflecting strong support from their members.
Looking ahead, six collective bargaining agreements are set to expire at the end of the current school year, including contracts with the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), and various associations representing custodial staff, paraeducators, educational office professionals, and principals. Negotiations for these contracts are expected to commence soon.
Additionally, the meeting addressed the district's commitment to fostering inclusivity through affinity groups, particularly the Kent Educators of Color Network. Last year, district leaders focused on building trust and understanding the needs of these groups. This year, they have initiated partnerships to support new staff and enhance resource accessibility, including participation in new employee orientations and the development of a dedicated website for resources.
The discussions underscored the district's ongoing efforts to create supportive environments for all staff, emphasizing inclusivity and collaboration as essential components of their strategic goals. The meeting concluded with an invitation for questions from board members, indicating a commitment to transparency and community engagement in the district's initiatives.
