During a recent government meeting, community concerns regarding a carbon sequestration project in Macon County took center stage. Brett Robertson, a local resident, expressed his apprehension about the project proposed by ADM, highlighting safety and environmental contamination issues. He criticized the council for not inviting independent experts on liquid CO2 pipeline technology during a previous meeting, instead relying on testimonies from representatives with financial stakes in the project.

Robertson pointed out that less than 18 months after the initial discussions, a significant breach had already occurred, raising alarms about the project's safety protocols. He emphasized ADM's poor safety record in Illinois, urging the council to suspend the agreement and seek expert opinions on the risks associated with CO2 leaks.

In addition to the carbon sequestration discussion, the meeting featured updates on community events and initiatives. Linda Little, the Dementia Friendly Decatur coordinator, provided an overview of efforts to support individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. She reported that over 250 individuals had been trained in dementia awareness, with several local businesses now recognized as dementia-friendly. Little also invited council members to an upcoming event aimed at further educating the community on dementia-related issues.

The meeting underscored the importance of community engagement in local governance, with residents voicing concerns about environmental safety and public health while also celebrating initiatives aimed at improving quality of life for vulnerable populations.
