In a recent government meeting, officials from Champaign and Urbana, along with Champaign County leaders, announced the proclamation of September 15th through September 22, 2024, as Champaign Urbana PrideFest week. This declaration highlights the cities' longstanding commitment to LGBTQ+ rights and representation.
The meeting acknowledged the historical significance of the LGBTQ+ movement, tracing its roots back to the Stonewall Uprising in 1969 and the formation of the Gay Liberation Front by University of Illinois students in 1971. Since 1972, Champaign and Urbana have been leaders in Illinois, implementing protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
The proclamation also recognized the United Pride Uniting Pride Up Center of Champaign County, established in 2009 to advocate for the wellness and visibility of LGBTQ+ communities. The upcoming PrideFest week will feature a series of social and educational events, culminating in a parade in downtown Urbana on September 21, 2024.
Mayors Deborah Frank Feynan and Diane Wolfe Marlin, along with Champaign County Executive Steve Summers and County Board Chair Samantha Carter, emphasized the importance of community engagement and support for LGBTQ+ individuals during the announcement. The event aims to foster inclusivity and celebrate the diverse history of LGBTQ+ representation in the region.
