During a recent Palm Bay City Council meeting, community leaders gathered to address pressing local issues, including the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and the recognition of individuals making significant contributions to public safety and domestic violence awareness.

The meeting commenced with an invocation led by Deacon Patricia Masterson, who called for a moment of silence in memory of those affected by the hurricane. She emphasized the need for compassion and support for families who lost their homes, invoking a spirit of wisdom and justice for the council members as they deliberated on city matters.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the recognition of Billy LeBlanc, a DoorDash driver who heroically saved a motorcycle accident victim's life. LeBlanc performed chest compressions on the victim, who had been left unconscious on the road after a hit-and-run incident. His quick actions were praised by council members, who underscored the importance of community members stepping up in times of crisis.

Additionally, the council proclaimed October 2024 as Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. Mayor Medina highlighted the alarming statistics surrounding domestic violence, noting that nearly one in three women and one in four men experience physical violence from an intimate partner. The proclamation acknowledged the efforts of the Palm Bay Police Department's victim services unit, which has been instrumental in providing support and advocacy for victims over the past 26 years.

Kathy Brito, a survivor of domestic violence, shared her personal story, emphasizing the critical role of victim services in her recovery. She urged community members to be aware of the resources available for those affected by domestic violence, reinforcing the message that help is accessible even without a police report.

The meeting concluded with a call for community engagement, encouraging residents to apply for vacancies on various advisory boards and to participate in local initiatives aimed at fostering safety and support within the community.
