In a recent government meeting, officials discussed significant budgetary needs related to overtime costs and mandatory training for law enforcement personnel. The department is requesting a $173,000 increase in overtime funding, driven by a three-year average and an additional $24,000 to cover ongoing expenses.
This year marks the first implementation of the Criminal Justice Training Commission (CJTC) training, which is required every three years for each deputy. The training, classified as an unfunded mandate by the state, has resulted in increased overtime costs as officers are needed to cover shifts during training sessions. Officials noted that while the collective bargaining agreement has seen increases, the value of overtime hours has diminished due to a decrease in available hours.
The budget proposal also includes funding for three new vehicles, designated as white fleet vehicles rather than patrol units, along with $30,000 allocated for outfitting these vehicles. Additionally, there is a request for $2,000 to address overtime for the evidence unit, which has been drawing from the patrol budget, and $1,000 for other overtime needs.
Lastly, the department is seeking $50,000 to construct a storage facility at Building 11, following previously authorized ARPA funding for site preparation. This funding is aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and addressing storage needs.
