In a recent government meeting, the Emeryville City Council celebrated local artists and discussed the acquisition of new public artworks. The event showcased over 223 pieces from 154 local artists, all of whom either live or work in Emeryville. The selection process involved a panel of five members, including local art professionals and community representatives, who evaluated the artworks based on aesthetics, public appeal, and durability.
The panel recommended the purchase of a striking nine-foot totem by artist Roberto Gastillamunde, which is proposed to be displayed prominently in the City Hall lobby. The council also acknowledged Bill Schwab and Jenny O'Connor for their honorable mentions, with Schwab's work previously exhibited in the building.
The council discussed the financial aspects of the acquisition, noting a need for an additional $12,850 to cover the purchase and installation costs, which exceed the standard $25,000 budget. The installation will require careful consideration due to the piece's height and weight.
Public comments during the meeting highlighted the community's enthusiasm for the arts, with Gastillamunde expressing gratitude for the recognition and support from the city. Council member Bowers commended the success of the recent arts celebration, noting it was the largest and best-attended event in its 35-year history.
The council unanimously moved to approve the recommendations, reinforcing Emeryville's commitment to supporting local artists and enhancing public spaces with art.
