Council Member Angela Whitfield Callaway presented the Spirit of Detroit award to Dr. Richardson Phillips, the newly appointed president of Loyola High School. Following this, Council President Pro Tempore James Tate honored Nicole Sherrod Freeman, who recently transitioned to the role of president at the Community Foundation of Southeastern Michigan after serving as the chief economic and workforce development officer for the city. Tate highlighted Freeman's extensive experience and her significant contributions to Detroit's economic development, including securing over $1 billion in public and private real estate development and facilitating job placements for thousands of residents. Freeman, visibly moved, acknowledged the collaborative efforts of her colleagues and the community, stating that her achievements reflect the collective work done together.

Council members shared heartfelt testimonials, praising both awardees for their leadership, dedication, and the positive influence they have had on the city. The session concluded with a call for public comments, which were temporarily suspended to honor the two leaders.
