During a recent government meeting, significant updates were shared regarding community improvements and broadband expansion efforts in Fluvanna County.

The meeting commenced with acknowledgments of local contributions, including the completion of a kiosk at Pleasant Grove Park and an Eagle Scout project that installed a horse mounting step. The finance department, led by Miss Melton, was congratulated for receiving the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting for the twelfth consecutive year.

Upcoming meetings were announced, with regular sessions scheduled for November 6 at 5 PM, November 20 at 6 PM, and December 4 at 5 PM.

A key presentation was delivered by Galen Creekmore from Firefly Broadband, who provided an update on the county's broadband expansion initiatives. Firefly, a subsidiary of Central Virginia Electric Cooperative, has been working to bridge the digital divide in rural areas through a series of grants and partnerships. Creekmore highlighted the cooperative's history and its commitment to providing fiber optic internet to underserved regions.

Currently, Firefly has nearly 6,000 active connections in Fluvanna County, with a take rate of approximately 55%. The company is targeting summer 2025 for the completion of broadband service in several unserved areas, leveraging partnerships with Dominion Energy to facilitate infrastructure development.

Creekmore emphasized that all identified unserved locations in the county will have access to Firefly's services, aligning with the Federal Communications Commission's definition of broadband. The presentation concluded with a commitment to continue working closely with local officials and the community to ensure comprehensive internet access.

The meeting underscored the county's ongoing efforts to enhance local infrastructure and connectivity, reflecting a proactive approach to community development and support for residents' needs.
