The City of Sunnyvale is moving forward with its ambitious public art initiative, the Sons of Sunnyvale program, as the commission reviewed and approved 26 artist proposals during a recent meeting. This project, originally known as the Sunnyvale Icon Sculpture Project, was allocated $100,000 from the public art fund by the city council in November 2021, with the aim of creating a distinct icon that reflects the community's identity.
Public Art Coordinator Kristen Dance and Recreation Manager Trenton Hill presented the proposals, highlighting the project's goal to encourage exploration of local parks while showcasing original works by local artists. The selected parks for the installations include De Anza, Los Palmas, Ortega, Ponderosa, Columbia, and Fairwood Parks, chosen for their suitability and lack of upcoming public art projects.
In June 2023, a call for artists was issued, attracting 39 applicants from several counties, which were then narrowed down to 26 by a jury of residents. The artists were encouraged to align their designs with Sunnyvale's vision of inclusion, diversity, and sustainable innovation. The commission is set to approve the proposals collectively, although individual designs can be reviewed further if deemed potentially offensive.
The meeting marks a significant step in enhancing Sunnyvale's cultural landscape, fostering community engagement through art, and supporting local artists.
