In a recent government meeting, the importance of collaboration in addressing educational funding was highlighted by a speaker who commended the efforts of the NHFT's Union Community Coalition. This coalition, which includes NHFT members, five other unions, various community organizations, and support from at least eight city alders, a board of education member, a state senator, and Mayor Elicker, recently mobilized at three schools—Metro, Fair Haven, and Bridal Rodgers—to advocate for full funding from state and federal governments.
The speaker noted a significant development following this collective action: Mayor Elicker and Dr. Negron announced a proposal to allocate an additional $3 million to the New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) general fund and $5.5 million for capital improvements. While acknowledging that this funding does not completely resolve the ongoing challenges related to school funding and facilities, the speaker emphasized that it represents a positive step forward.
The meeting underscored the effectiveness of community collaboration in driving educational policy changes, reinforcing the notion that united efforts can lead to meaningful advancements in local governance and public education funding.
