The discussions emphasized the commitment to ensuring that every student, regardless of their background or learning abilities, has access to essential educational resources.
Key initiatives presented included the dual immersion program and the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) elective, which aims to prepare students for high school and college. Students shared personal testimonials about their experiences in AVID, noting how the program equips them with vital skills such as effective note-taking, organizational strategies, and college readiness. One student, Ariana Muscotte, explained that AVID helps her make meaningful connections in her learning, while Annie Ramos expressed her desire to improve her chances of college admission through the program.
The meeting also addressed the significance of social-emotional learning (SEL), particularly for newcomer students. Thiago Guerra, a 7th grader from Peru, shared how SEL lessons have helped him navigate the challenges of adapting to a new country and language. The school provides additional support for these students through small group SEL sessions, fostering self-awareness and advocacy skills.
To enhance parent engagement, the school has initiated meetings and forums that allow parents to voice their concerns and contribute to school initiatives.
