During a recent city government meeting, officials outlined several key projects aimed at enhancing community infrastructure and public safety.
The first initiative discussed was the implementation of free public Wi-Fi in city parks, designed to provide residents and visitors with reliable internet access. This multi-phase project aims to increase park usage and improve community engagement by making these spaces more appealing for recreation, education, and work.
Next on the agenda was the proposal for a smart city surveillance system, which includes the establishment of a real-time crime center. This project seeks to bolster public safety by upgrading the city’s CCTV infrastructure and centralizing public safety applications, thereby enhancing the security of city assets and critical utility infrastructure.
The meeting also covered the InigoV Implementation Project, which focuses on automating and digitizing the city’s permitting process. This initiative aims to streamline workflows and integrate existing software systems, improving efficiency in city operations.
Parks and Recreation Director Billy Neal reported on various park improvements, including a request for $132,000 to upgrade Fairway Park with an outdoor kitchen and irrigation enhancements. Additional projects include renovations at Riverrun Park and Sunset Lakes, as well as a $400,000 request for renovations to the Miramar Regional Park Aquatics Complex, which is now 17 years old.
Public Works presented a $1.1 million milling and resurfacing project for Grama Parkway and a $300,000 sidewalk replacement initiative covering approximately 1.3 miles citywide. Other projects include tree removal along canal embankments for maintenance access and improvements to the historic Grama drainage system.
Social Services proposed the installation of bulletproof glass at the multi-service complex for staff safety, while Support Services outlined plans for a new community youth center, requesting $4 million for construction. The center will feature a variety of facilities, including multipurpose rooms and a banquet hall.
Utilities Deputy Director Rolando Taylor discussed several projects aimed at upgrading the wastewater treatment plant, including the design and installation of a sand separator and a new digester system to improve operational capacity.
