The campaign, supported by the Broward Sierra Group Junior Team, seeks to transition Broward County Public Schools to 100% clean energy, addressing the significant carbon emissions attributed to educational institutions.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, American schools collectively emit approximately 72 million metric tons of CO2 annually, equivalent to the output of 18 coal-fired power plants. The students emphasized the urgent need for schools to shift away from fossil fuels, which contribute to climate change and its associated impacts, such as rising sea levels and intensified hurricanes.

During the meeting, student representatives expressed gratitude for the commission's support, highlighting the importance of creating safe and clean learning environments. They noted that Broward County has already made strides in sustainability but must continue to lead in educational environmental stewardship.
