Bellevue proclaims October as Hindu American Awareness Month

The Bellevue City Council convened for its regular meeting on October 15, 2024, with a focus on community engagement and recognition of significant cultural contributions. Mayor Lynn Robinson opened the meeting by emphasizing the importance of respectful discourse during public comments, warning that disruptions would not be tolerated.

The council proceeded with two proclamations. The first, read by Council Member John Stokes, proclaimed October 26, 2024, as Arbor Day in Bellevue. This recognition highlights the city's commitment to environmental stewardship and the importance of trees in enhancing community well-being. Stokes noted Bellevue's status as a Tree City USA for the 33rd consecutive year, underscoring the city's efforts to integrate natural and built environments.

Laura Lawler, a Bellevue Naturalist, expressed gratitude for the city's dedication to native trees and environments, emphasizing the long-term benefits of restoration initiatives. She encouraged community members to engage with local natural areas for their mental and physical health.

The second proclamation, presented by Council Member Conrad Lee, declared October as Hindu American Awareness and Appreciation Month. This initiative aims to acknowledge the diverse contributions of Hindu Americans to the community and to combat stereotypes and misconceptions. Lee highlighted the significance of October, coinciding with major Hindu holidays and the birth month of Mahatma Gandhi.

Atul Harpura, a local leader in the Hindu American community, accepted the proclamation on behalf of his community, expressing appreciation for the recognition and the message it sends. He also shared details about community service initiatives, including a food donation campaign during the festive season, aimed at supporting local food banks.

The meeting concluded with a call for photographs to commemorate the proclamations, reinforcing the council's commitment to celebrating cultural diversity and community involvement in Bellevue.
