A recent study by the Trevor Project has revealed alarming statistics regarding the mental health of transgender and non-binary youth in states that have enacted anti-trans legislation. The research indicates that suicide attempts among these young individuals increased between 7% and 72% in states with such laws. This groundbreaking study, which analyzed national survey data from 61,000 transgender and non-binary youth, was published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Human Behavior.
Trevor Project CEO James Black emphasized the significance of the findings, noting that this is the first study to establish a causal relationship between anti-trans legislation and increased suicide attempts among these populations. The research highlights a troubling trend: between 2018 and 2022, 48 pieces of legislation targeting transgender youth were enacted across 19 states. These laws cover a range of issues, including access to bathrooms, gender-affirming care, pronoun usage, and discussions of LGBTQ+ topics in schools.
The study underscores both direct and indirect impacts of these laws on young people's mental health, raising urgent concerns about the well-being of transgender and non-binary youth in the current legislative climate.
