In a recent government meeting, officials introduced the Equity Explorer, a digital dashboard aimed at enhancing understanding of equity across various municipalities. This innovative tool is designed to provide users with insights into demographic disparities by allowing them to analyze data related to equity indicators at the census tract level.
Desiree, a representative from the planning department, emphasized that the Equity Explorer will help identify inequalities among different demographic groups, thereby highlighting the interconnectedness of various social issues. The tool aggregates data from multiple federal and state agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency and the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development, facilitating cross-collaboration among government entities.
Richard Crowther, a senior GIS analyst, detailed the methodology behind the Equity Explorer, explaining that it utilizes 16 indicators to assess equity. Each census tract is scored based on its performance against these indicators, with a maximum score of 20. Tracts scoring 6 or higher are classified as equity emphasis communities, which are prominently displayed on the dashboard.
The Equity Explorer is expected to be a valuable resource for town planners, public works officials, and other professionals, aiding in decision-making and resource allocation while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. The dashboard is accessible online, allowing users to explore the data and understand the equity landscape in their regions.
