Syracuse unveils ambitious plans for I81 redevelopment

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the progress and future plans for the I-81 project, specifically focusing on Contract 5, which encompasses the area from Colvin Street to Birch Street in Syracuse. This contract is part of a larger initiative that includes four other contracts currently under construction in various locations, including Cicero and the Inner Harbor.

Contract 5 aims to transform the highway into Business Loop 81, bringing it to grade and introducing significant infrastructure changes. Key features of this contract include the construction of a new railroad bridge, a new rail line, and a roundabout at Van Buren. Traffic calming measures will also be implemented, including the introduction of curves, a median, street trees, and decorative lighting along the highway.

A notable aspect of the project is the new Colvin Street off-ramp, which will provide improved access to the university area and is slated for early construction to facilitate traffic flow. Additionally, noise barriers will be installed on both the south side of the community and the cemetery side to mitigate sound pollution from the highway.

The roundabout at Van Buren is designed to enhance traffic management in this busy corridor, featuring a pedestrian crossing to improve safety for foot traffic. The project also aims to create a greater separation between the Business Loop 81 and the surrounding community, particularly near Dr. King Elementary School, where improved pedestrian access is a priority.

Community feedback has played a crucial role in shaping the project, leading to the relocation of the originally proposed roundabout from the school area to Van Buren. The initiative reflects a commitment to balancing infrastructure development with community needs, ensuring that the enhancements will benefit both traffic flow and local residents.
