During a recent government meeting, the Community and Economic Development (CED) department presented its biennial budget, highlighting a commitment to enhancing the vitality and livability of Renton. The budget remains consistent with previous years, with a notable request for an additional $150,000 annually to maintain the downtown cleaning contract, aimed at supporting local businesses and residents.
CED leadership emphasized the importance of customer service improvements, announcing plans for an internal assessment to identify cost-effective enhancements. Additionally, the department is set to implement a \"Paint with Purpose\" initiative, transforming areas frequently tagged with graffiti into community art projects in collaboration with local businesses and residents.
The meeting also addressed enhanced code compliance efforts, which will begin in 2025. The initiative aims to ensure equity and fairness while assisting low-income residents with minor code compliance issues, such as yard maintenance.
Planning and housing initiatives were discussed, with a focus on updating the comprehensive plan and critical area ordinances. The department is actively seeking partnerships to utilize House Bill 1590 funds for affordable housing projects and will continue to roll out programs supporting middle housing.
Several significant redevelopment projects were highlighted, including the Longacre's redevelopment master plan and the Grady Transit-Oriented Development site, which aims to provide affordable housing and retail options.
Economic development efforts will focus on supporting small businesses, expanding the small business liaison program, and pursuing larger-scale business recruitment, including potential partnerships with Costco and Kids Quest Museum. The department is also committed to fostering a creative economy and revitalizing downtown Renton through a formalized arts and culture master plan.
Lastly, the meeting introduced plans for a new gathering hub, tentatively named Legacy Square, in partnership with the Rave Foundation. The project aims to leverage the upcoming World Cup to create a vibrant community space, with conceptual designs nearing completion and construction expected to begin in 2025. The total budget for the project is estimated at $1.1 million, with additional funding for gateway renovations.
