During a recent government meeting, officials discussed significant developments regarding the Jones Street sidewalk project and the adoption of a downtown generational plan.
Engineering Director Polan presented an administrative report on the Jones Street sidewalk project, which involves the construction of approximately 1,200 linear feet of new sidewalk, curb and gutter, storm drainage, minor paving, and striping. The project, awarded to Pecos Construction Incorporated for $682,534.25, is set to enhance connectivity in the downtown area, particularly near town hall. The total project cost is estimated at $1.2 million, necessitating an amendment to the project ordinance to allocate an additional $300,000 due to rising construction costs. This funding will be sourced from the 2024 geotransportation bonds and a matching grant from CAMPO.
The project, originally awarded in 2019, faced delays due to COVID-19 and budget shortfalls from the Department of Transportation, with construction expected to commence in the spring and last approximately 12 months.
In addition, the meeting included a presentation on the downtown generational plan, aimed at guiding future development and initiatives in the area. Junior Deputy Town Manager Seymour highlighted the collaborative efforts with local businesses and the FEDA in crafting the plan, which is intended to serve as a strategic blueprint for downtown improvements. The plan emphasizes inclusivity and aims to articulate the projects necessary for the area’s growth and revitalization.
Both initiatives reflect the town's commitment to enhancing infrastructure and fostering community development, with officials expressing optimism about the positive impact these projects will have on the local area.
