During a recent city council meeting, officials discussed an exciting new event proposal aimed at honoring the late Rod Trowbridge, who passed away from COVID-19. Ryan Trowbridge, son of Rod, presented plans for the fifth annual Rod Trowbridge Memorial Fly-In, which will take place at the Augusta Municipal Airport. This event, which has grown significantly since its inception, is expected to attract around 3,000 participants over multiple days and will feature a variety of activities including live music, a barbecue competition, a car show, and a motorcycle poker run.
The event aims to foster community spirit and provide a free, family-friendly atmosphere, with Ryan emphasizing the importance of keeping it accessible amid rising costs of living. The airport manager, Randy, highlighted the event's potential to draw in visitors who may not typically engage with the airport, transforming it into a vibrant community hub.
City officials expressed their support for the event, recognizing the need for logistical planning, including security, parking, and sanitation services. A proposal was made for the city to assist with the financial aspects of providing additional portable restrooms, estimated at around $1,750 for the two-day event.
The council unanimously approved the event, with members expressing their enthusiasm for the initiative and gratitude for Ryan's efforts to honor his father's legacy. The meeting also welcomed Tanner Thomas, the new code enforcement officer, who introduced himself and shared his excitement about serving the Augusta community.
