In a significant step towards inclusivity and representation, the Village of Skokie is set to unveil a new village seal, marking the first time in its history that a Native American director, Kim, and a majority Native American board have played pivotal roles in the decision-making process. This initiative, which has been two years in the making, aims to honor the local Native American community and rectify past harms associated with the village's existing seal.

During a recent government meeting, members of the Village Seal Review Committee presented their findings and recommendations, emphasizing the need for a design that accurately reflects the rich history and multicultural fabric of Skokie. Jasmine Grenell, a member of the Oneida Nation and co-chair of the committee, highlighted that the current seal, in use since the late 1940s, does not represent the local tribes and perpetuates harmful stereotypes.

The committee's recommendations were unanimously in favor of developing a new design that embodies the village's diverse heritage and future aspirations. The design process involved extensive community engagement, including surveys and listening sessions, which revealed that residents value Skokie's diversity, community spirit, and natural features.

The proposed new seal prominently features a flame, symbolizing the \"Skokie spirit,\" which has historical significance dating back to the village's resistance against hate groups in the late 1970s. The design also incorporates elements that reflect the indigenous flora of the area and is intended to be accessible to all community members.

As the committee prepares to launch a community survey to gather further input on the design, the village board expressed strong support for the initiative, recognizing it as a proud moment for Skokie. The final design will be presented to the board for approval, with plans to subsequently address updates to the village flag, which currently features the old seal.
