During a recent government meeting, representatives from the YMCA presented their ongoing youth development initiatives, particularly focusing on their successful Teen Night program at the Johnson YMCA in White Haven. The program, which has been operational since July 2023, aims to provide a safe and engaging environment for teenagers aged 13 to 18. So far, it has served over 1,500 youths without any reportable incidents, highlighting its positive impact on the community.
Commissioner Sugarman expressed support for the program and encouraged other commissioners to join in backing the YMCA's efforts to expand these opportunities throughout the community. The Teen Night events occur every fourth Saturday of the month, and there are plans to extend similar programs to other areas, including the northern parts of the community.
In addition to the YMCA's presentation, the meeting also addressed a resolution to allocate $25,000 from the FY 2025 operating budget to Child Strategies Inc., a charitable organization. This funding is part of the Milton Community Enhancement Program Grant Fund and was sponsored by Commissioners Henry E. Brooks and Michael Lowry. Commissioner Brooks noted that the grantee, who is also a member of the school board, had to leave the meeting early but has previously applied for similar grants.
The meeting concluded with a favorable recommendation for both the YMCA's Teen Night program and the funding for Child Strategies Inc., reflecting a commitment to enhancing community resources for youth development and support.
