During a recent government meeting, Windsor Park resident Hector Martel voiced strong support for the Cameron Road Desa project, emphasizing its importance for enhancing pedestrian and bicycle safety in the area. Martel, who lives near Cameron Road, highlighted the daily presence of children, commuters, and cyclists on the road, noting that he personally avoids biking there due to safety concerns.
Martel praised the project as a long-overdue initiative that would significantly improve connections into and out of Windsor Park, which is bordered by major highways. He pointed out that previous lane reductions on Cameron Road have already made the road safer, and he urged the council to formalize bike lanes and improve infrastructure to complement these changes.
He expressed particular concern about the 1.3-mile stretch of three-lane segments, which he believes poses a danger to users. Martel referenced a memorial ghost bike for a local cyclist, Mary Day, to underscore the risks associated with the area, especially at the intersection of Cameron and Hochress. He called for enhanced bicycle protections, particularly as construction on I-35 is set to begin, which could lead to increased traffic and higher speeds on Cameron Road.
Council members acknowledged Martel's testimony, with one member reflecting on their own positive experience with lane reductions on Cameron Road, noting a significant decrease in accidents and improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The meeting underscored a community commitment to advancing infrastructure projects that prioritize safety and accessibility for all road users.
