During a recent government meeting, officials announced plans to dedicate a central area of Veterans Memorial Park in Sierra Vista as the Frederick W. Rick Mueller II Parade Field, honoring the late Mayor Rick Mueller's extensive contributions to the community and his service as a decorated veteran.
Mayor Mueller, who passed away on May 29, 2024, was recognized for his unwavering commitment to Sierra Vista, where he settled after retiring from the Army in 1995. His dedication to civic engagement began long before he entered public office, as he regularly attended city council and planning meetings. Elected to the City Council in 2000, he served for a decade before becoming mayor in 2010, a position he held for three consecutive terms—the longest in the city's history.
Under his leadership, Sierra Vista emerged as a regional hub for commerce, education, healthcare, tourism, and technology. He was a staunch advocate for veterans and active military personnel, championing initiatives that supported Fort Huachuca and enhancing the community's reputation for its commitment to servicemen and their families. His efforts garnered national recognition for Sierra Vista from the Association of Defense Communities.
Beyond local governance, Mayor Mueller was active on various boards, including the League of Arizona Cities and Towns Executive Board and the Arizona Military Affairs Commission. His influence extended to charitable organizations, where he held leadership roles and contributed to significant community projects, such as the Salvation Army's Chapel and Community Center.
The proposal to name the parade field after him received unanimous approval from the Parks and Recreation Commission, reflecting the community's respect and gratitude for his legacy. The dedication is set to take place during the 2024 Veterans Day activities, ensuring that Mayor Mueller's impact on Sierra Vista will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
