During a recent government meeting, the Portsmouth School Foundation was commended for hosting a successful state of the schools breakfast, which attracted over 200 attendees. The event highlighted significant achievements and ongoing initiatives within the school district, with gratitude expressed towards sponsors and volunteers for their contributions.
The meeting also celebrated a notable event where sixth graders participated in the Norfolk Fleet Fest STEM day, engaging in various science, technology, engineering, and mathematics activities. Students toured naval ships and explored aircraft displays, thanks to the collaboration between the elementary science team and Naval Station Norfolk.
In a heartwarming gesture, local artist Missy Elliott surprised students at Douglas Park Elementary School by gifting each child a new pair of Nike shoes and socks, coinciding with the celebration of Missy Elliott Day in Portsmouth. The excitement among the students was palpable, as noted by attendees of the event.
Looking ahead, the school district is set to host its first division-wide college fair on October 28th at Churchland High School, featuring over 60 colleges and universities. This initiative aims to provide students with valuable opportunities to connect with college representatives and explore future educational pathways.
Additionally, a reminder was issued regarding a professional learning day for staff on October 30th, which will result in an adjusted dismissal schedule for students. Information regarding retention bonuses for staff is expected to be communicated shortly.
