The Palatka City Commission convened on October 24, 2024, to celebrate significant milestones and recognize community contributions during a recent meeting.

The session commenced with a proclamation honoring the 50th anniversary of the Arc of Putnam County. Mayor Roberta M. Prayath presented the proclamation, commending the organization for its unwavering advocacy for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Mr. D'Souza, a representative from the Arc, expressed gratitude for the recognition, highlighting the organization's origins in 1974 when a group of dedicated parents sought to provide essential support and opportunities for their loved ones. He also announced upcoming renovations to the Whitaker Center, aimed at expanding programs and fostering inclusivity within the community.

The commission also proclaimed October as Family History Month, encouraging residents to explore their genealogical roots and the history of Palatka. Representatives from the Putnam County Geological Society were present to support this initiative.

In addition, the week of October 21-27, 2024, was designated as Florida City Government Week. The proclamation encourages citizen participation in events that promote civic engagement and educational partnerships between local government and schools.

The meeting recognized two employees for their outstanding service: Chief Christopher Taylor as Employee of the Month for September and Fire Engineer Jared Bradley for October. Chief Taylor was praised for his dedication to public safety and ethical standards, while Engineer Bradley was acknowledged for his expertise and commitment to training in hazardous materials response.

The meeting concluded with a financial report for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2024, indicating ongoing efforts to maintain transparency and accountability within the city’s operations.
