The Avon Town Council convened on October 24th, where members began the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a roll call confirming the presence of all council members. The council swiftly moved through the consent agenda, approving the check register and minutes from the previous meeting without any objections.
During the public comment segment, Swaroop Waugh, a sixth-grade student and long-time resident of Avon, presented details about the Sewa Diwali campaign. This initiative, running from September 27th to November 10th, aims to address food insecurity in local communities by partnering with various organizations. Waugh highlighted the campaign's success last year, which included the collection of over 8,800 pounds of food and the provision of more than 7,300 meals to families in need. This year, the campaign seeks to surpass those achievements by supporting local organizations such as the Mary Lee Food Pantry and the Boys and Girls Club of Indianapolis.
Waugh emphasized the importance of community involvement, inviting residents to participate through donations or volunteering. The campaign aims to provide essential food items to those in food deserts, reinforcing the message that service to others is a vital aspect of the Diwali celebration.
Following the public comments, council members shared brief remarks. Council member Don Loudon acknowledged October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, encouraging residents to prioritize health checkups. Other members had no additional comments, and the meeting concluded with a reminder for residents to exercise their voting rights.
