During a recent meeting at NFA North, the school community celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a series of engaging activities aimed at fostering cultural awareness and leadership among students. Mr. Harvey hosted the 11th Hispanic Heritage Padlock, where students from NFA North shared their country projects with elementary students at GAMS. In return, GAMS students showcased their performances during a Hispanic Heritage Assembly, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the event.
A notable highlight was the recognition of senior Angel Udena Carrasco, who participated in the Puerto Rican Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PRiLIGHT) last year and was accepted again this year as a Hudson Valley delegate. Carrasco shared her experiences at the podium, emphasizing the program's focus on civic engagement and leadership for Hispanic and Latino students. She described the valuable connections made during the program and the cultural insights gained, including the diversity of language among participants.
At NFA West, students celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of activities, including a flag parade, food tastings, and dance lessons. Students learned about Latino culture through interactive experiences, such as guessing Spanish food recipes and participating in dance sessions led by their peers. Additionally, 10th-grade student Madison Francis contributed to the festivities by introducing a 360 machine to enhance the music and dance experience.
The district-wide family and community engagement team also honored Hispanic families through an event that featured food, cultural activities, and opportunities for parents to learn about available resources for their children. The meeting underscored the importance of celebrating cultural diversity not just during designated months, but as an ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students and families.
