In a recent government meeting, officials discussed a potential shift in emergency dispatch services from Chagrin Valley Dispatch (CBD) to Geauga County Dispatch, highlighting significant improvements in response times and cost savings.

The current system routes 911 calls from cellular phones to Geauga County before they are transferred back to CBD, causing delays in emergency response. By switching to Geauga County Dispatch, local authorities anticipate a more efficient process where emergency calls would be directly handled by Geauga County, allowing for quicker notifications to local rescue squads. This change is expected to enhance response times for medical emergencies significantly.

Financially, the proposed transition could yield substantial savings. Officials estimate a reduction of approximately $40,000 in police dispatch costs over five years, totaling $200,000. Additionally, savings from IT service contracts and the elimination of costs associated with Motorola software could bring the total savings to around $600,000 over a decade.

Prosecutor Flay's letter, read during the meeting, expressed strong support for the switch, emphasizing the need for updated technology in emergency services. He noted that the increase in cell phone usage has rendered the current dispatch system inefficient, as many calls are misrouted due to outdated infrastructure. Flay argued that residents of South Russell have contributed to the funding of Geauga County's dispatch improvements through sales tax but have not been able to benefit from these advancements.

The discussion underscored the urgency of modernizing emergency response systems to ensure that residents receive timely assistance when they need it most. The proposed changes are set to be further evaluated as officials consider the best path forward for the community's safety and financial well-being.
