In a recent government meeting, Dr. Hackett provided a preliminary update on school enrollment figures, noting that the official October 1 report has been extended to early November due to ongoing adjustments post-pandemic. The current enrollment stands at approximately 4,319, a significant rebound from last year's low of 4,254, although still below the pre-pandemic high of 4,446 in 2021.
Dr. Hackett highlighted a notable increase in elementary K-5 enrollment, which is expected to impact staffing as larger classes transition into middle and high school. Specifically, a sizable fifth-grade class is anticipated to move into sixth grade next fiscal year, prompting potential adjustments in staffing levels at the middle school.
River Street and Cabr schools are also seeing promising enrollment numbers, with River Street already reaching 32 students in K-5, close to its projected capacity of 35. However, the school is currently operating at about 70% occupancy, indicating room for further growth as additional housing units are developed in the area.
Looking ahead, Dr. Hackett emphasized the importance of upcoming budget discussions and the need for an enrollment study to inform the district's master facilities plan. This study is expected to provide insights into future enrollment trends and facility requirements, with results anticipated by the end of December.
The meeting concluded with a call for further analysis of enrollment patterns, particularly in relation to demographic changes and housing developments, as officials seek to understand the factors driving enrollment fluctuations.
