In a recent government meeting, the Nampa City Council discussed a proposed zoning code amendment aimed at revitalizing the downtown area, specifically focusing on the Wall Street Alley project. Principal Planner Christy Watkins presented the amendment, which seeks to enhance the aesthetic and functional aspects of the downtown historic zoning district.

The proposed changes, recommended for approval by the Planning and Zoning Commission in September, are part of a broader initiative to transform the Wall Street corridor into a more inviting and pedestrian-friendly space. Current conditions in the area are characterized by poor lighting, overgrown weeds, cracked asphalt, graffiti, and overflowing dumpsters, creating an unwelcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.

Key components of the Wall Street project include the relocation of trash and grease receptacles, the construction of a dumpster enclosure, and the installation of a trash compactor. Additionally, the project will feature artistic installations, planters, flowers, improved lighting, and pavement resurfacing. A significant aspect of the amendment is the prohibition of private trash receptacles in the city right of way, ensuring that all waste disposal is managed through a centralized enclosure.

The city is collaborating with Republic Services to finalize the leasing of the trash compactor, which will serve commercial businesses in the designated area between First Street South and Second Street South, and between Twelfth Avenue South and Thirteenth Avenue South. This initiative aims to create a cleaner, safer, and more attractive downtown environment, ultimately fostering a vibrant community space surrounded by local businesses.
