In a recent government meeting, officials provided an update on the city's financial management and audit processes, highlighting significant progress in addressing longstanding financial issues. The last unmodified audit opinion for the city was issued in fiscal year 2014, with the most recent comprehensive financial report dating back to 2019. Since then, the city has faced challenges, prompting the establishment of a fiscal Project Management Office (PMO) aimed at tackling urgent financial distress.

The PMO, initially intended to operate for four months, has now been active for over a year, focusing on various objectives including financial monitoring, accountability reporting, and managing wastewater obligations. Key achievements reported include the issuance of 58 weekly reports, the implementation of a pooled cash management system, and the completion of numerous training sessions for city staff.

The meeting also addressed the city's accounting remediation services, which have made strides in reconciling financial records dating back to 2017. New financial statements have been submitted to external auditors, with ongoing efforts to finalize the fiscal year 2024 statements. The PMO has resolved 14 past audit findings and mitigated 18 key risks, contributing to improved financial integrity.

As the PMO prepares to close, officials confirmed that they will continue to support auditors in finalizing prior year balances. The city has also made progress in its ERP system, with cash balances reviewed and reconciliations completed for fiscal years 2021 through 2024.

Looking ahead, the city plans to roll out a new employee expense reimbursement module by the end of October, following some initial delays. Additional training sessions are scheduled to ensure staff are well-prepared for the new system.
