In a recent meeting of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, discussions centered around the urgent need for Holocaust education in the community, highlighted by a proposal for the Hilton Family Holocaust Education Center. Ruby Stanlis, a 7th grader from the Phoenix Hebrew Academy, passionately addressed the board, emphasizing the importance of teaching young people about the Holocaust amidst rising antisemitism and intolerance. She urged the board to support educational initiatives that would allow students to engage with history through survivor stories and interactive learning.

Frank Jacobson, director of the capital campaign for the Arizona Jewish Historical Society, presented a funding proposal for the center, seeking $2 million to support educational programs and resources for local schools. He underscored the critical role of education in combating hate and misinformation, aligning with Jewish values of remembrance and social responsibility.

The board members expressed strong support for the initiative, with Vice Chair Galvin and other supervisors acknowledging the significance of establishing a Holocaust education center in Phoenix, the largest U.S. city without such a facility. They highlighted the necessity of educating future generations to prevent the recurrence of historical atrocities.

The proposed center is set to begin construction in July 2025, with an anticipated opening in April 2027. The board unanimously approved the funding proposal, marking a significant step towards enhancing Holocaust education and fostering a more informed and compassionate community.
